A developer who completely demolished a property when he only had permission to demolish part of it has landed himself with a fine and legal costs totalling more than £120,000.
The developer has been given a year to pay the £80,000 fine and the local authority’s costs of £42,500. If he fails to do so, he faces a two-year jail sentence.
The house, which is in a conservation area, was to be replaced in part by a replica in keeping with the area. At no point did the owner tell the local authority that he intended to demolish the whole property, rather than just the part for which planning permission had been granted.
